Coins of the Admiral Gardner
Late in the evening of January 24, 1809, two outward bound East India ships, the Britannia and the Admiral Gardner, were caught in a tremendous gale. The harsh winds and raging sea combined to send both vessels crashing on the Goodwin Sands. Through the efforts of boatmen from the nearby shore, only about 10 sailors lost their lives due to this tragedy. Both of the ships, however, were destroyed, along with their valuable cargo. The total loss was said to be approximately 200,000 pounds. Part of the cargo carried by the Admiral Gardner were coins intended for use by the English people living in India. These copper X(10) Cash coins are dated 1808 and were recovered from the wreck, along with numerous other personal and naval items. These recovered coins are a tangible reminder of the power of the sea, and the tenacity of man to conquer it.
